The inaugural session featuring Josh Epstein, theatre lighting designer and adjunct professor at U.C.L.A., who smoothly transitions designing both East and West Coast shows in the award winning career, was our first guest speaker for the series.
Our audience was thirteen students from Burbank High School’s Stage Tech class lead by Karen Broderick and 2 students from Burroughs High School. In a relaxed atmosphere lasting over one hour, Josh told of his start at the University of Chicago where he was undecided about a career in theatre to an MFA degree in design from NYU. He started designing in New York but his wife got an offer for a Los Angeles job so he and his young family moved west were he quickly became a force in LA Theatre community. He has since kept up a busy bi-coastal professional schedule.
The students were not shy about asking great questions and in return got candid answers from Josh. After the talk, David Rosen, president of Kinetic, took the students on a tour of the facility and offered Kinetic Lighting “swag” for those attending.
Jim Moody coordinated the session with great help from Laura Steinroeder. Anyone interested in our hosting their school in a future “Conversations with…” or a suggesting of a great speaker can contact Jim Moody at firstname.lastname@example.org or Laura Steinroeder at email@example.com.
